Rubbish return

Within two minutes of disembarking from the excellent airport bus service last Friday and walking towards Princes Street, the first sights I encountered were not the wonderful Edinburgh skyline but a public drinking fountain full of cigarette ends, dog mess smeared over the payment and refuse bins opposite Jenners full to overflowing at 8.30am.

Upon arriving at my mother’s house shortly afterwards I saw waste bins full and overflow bags awaiting collection under the new fortnightly waste collection service. It would be more honest to change the city slogan from “Inspiring Capital” to “Detritus Capital” based on my recent experience of a return visit to my home city.

More focus on efficient waste management and street cleansing would appear to be much needed in the fair city of
Edinburgh.
