Rite in law
The debate about gay marriage has become nothing more than a dialogue between people who have stopped listening to each other. The most obvious solution is for Scotland to adopt the practice of some other European countries. All marriages would be civil marriages conducted by the registrar. Already Scottish registrars have a significant role in all marriages in Scotland.
After a civil ceremony couples could have whatever religious or secular rite they wished. Such rites would have no standing in the law of Scotland. It would then be up to the Scottish Parliament to decide who could or could not be married according to Scottish law.
Gay marriage would then no doubt become possible in law.
No religious or ethnic group would be forced to act against their beliefs and could also maintain their own marriage discipline.
Already divorce in Scotland is only recognised if granted by due legal process.
