Richly undeserved
If Andrew Anderson (Letters, 7 September) is correct, and a country’s equality is related to its prosperity, then Marxist governments the world over would have achieved boundless prosperity.
Simply pointing to countries that have a rich, tyrannical elite and no middle class does not prove that inequality is bad; it only shows the true nature of omnipotent government.
There is no sound rational basis for “tax the rich” policies; this idea was popularised by Marx and is rationalised envy.
It is also untrue that “there is no ‘simple fact’ of any importance” as this is simply an excuse to deny the reality that an economy cannot be taxed into growth.
