Rangers rebirth

I thought the opponents of Scottish independence, with their wild warnings of dire outcomes, were outright champions of hysterical hyperbole; that was until I read the remarks of Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan on the likely fallout from Rangers’ demise (your report, 5 July).

Apparently, there will be serious “social unrest” should the club actually vanish from the scene – a scenario no-one has suggested.

Following some pointless babble about club support passing from one generation to another, he declares that the only alternative place for the club is Division 1.

That implies preferential treatment, given that other clubs, notably Livingston, were relegated to the third division.

That would be contrary to natural justice, but if membership rules are to be distorted for the sake of the money Rangers’ fans bring, why not alter their club’s status within the game as a balance?

Let the club itself suggest where to be reinstated, with level ranking in Division 3, but starting each game with a score of -1 for Division 2 and -2 for Division 1.

Honour would be truly satisfied only by the club insisting on starting at the lowest level – and many of their supporters would agree with that; otherwise they risk supporters of other clubs in whichever other league they are placed refusing to attend home matches.
