I completely agree with Alistair Watson (Letters, 24 September) that the police should have arrested Conservative chief whip Andrew Mitchell after he called them “plebs”.

The reason why the police failed to arrest Mr Mitchell is because they perceived him to be of the “patrician” class and themselves to be of a lower order, or plebs. Hence a type of self-fulfilling prophecy. But still no excuse for abuse.
