I read with interest the claim made by Rob Marrs of the Heather Trust (Letters, 22 August) that “asulam is the only selective herbicide currently available for bracken control”, but I think he is not correct when he claims that “without asulam, we do not have a weapon to fight this invasive weed species”.

Only last Sunday, while walking in the Peak District, I remarked to my wife on the way that bracken was spreading uncontrolled and wondered whether there might not be some merit in trying to genetically modify sheep so that they could consume it safely.

If this could be done, the problem would be solved in an environmentally friendly manner, pace the anti-GM activists.
