Morals of money

George Kerevan’s the “Sun may yet set on the City of Shame” is an excoriating analysis (Perspective 20 July).

It raises some difficult issues for understanding the economic behaviour of financial elites in mass society.

Most importantly for an analysis is whether we have basically sound institutions with some corrupt people, or – because of the structure of society in global capitalism, institutions corrupt the people working in them.

Moralisers may bewail the decline in old values, but one hasn’t declined: the “pursuit of money”. That money is the measure of success, not only in the City, is perhaps the corrupting influence.
