Judging from the top stories in yesterday’s Scotsman, the Western world has been responsible for a financial sector run for the benefit of the rich and powerful, has destabilised the Middle East by its wrong-headed military adventures, and has created a survival-of-the-fittest culture in which the elderly are treated as scapegoats for society’s failures.

Institutions which should be setting an example of right behaviour, such as the churches, are obsessed with maintaining outdated institutions and judging others’ sexual activities.

So we are seriously planning to colonise Mars?
