Letter: PM must reveal tax power limits

SCOTLAND on Sunday reported “sources close to the Prime Minister” as saying further devolution of fiscal powers was inconsistent with Scotland remaining within the UK (News, 29 January).

There are many people who present greater fiscal autonomy as an option, not least the Scottish Liberal Democrats. If that option is being ruled out by the UK Prime Minister, it will be an important factor in many people’s decisions on how to vote in an independence referendum.

In such a fundamental matter, the Prime Minister ought not to hide behind an anonymous source. The Prime Minister must confirm whether greater tax powers for Scotland are an option or not, and what any limits might be.

Robert Seaton, Edinburgh

Yes, we wont be allowed any more fiscal powers than, say, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands!

The vast majority of "exclusive articles" or "sources close to the Minister" are off the record Westminster briefings. "The accuracy of these briefings depends very much on how angry, frustrated, gossipy, indignant, malicious, or truthful the particular source is when the information is received by journalists." The alcoholic state of the source only makes the information that bit more unreliable." (Source: Chris Moncrieff, former lobby journalist and Political Editor of the Press Association)

I would like to live in an independent Scotland which has a ZERO level of income tax( and its evil fiscal siblings) and instead raises its public revenue from a 100% collection of 100% societally- generated Land Rental Value.

It should already be clear to everyone in Scotland that greater fiscal autonomy short of independence is not an option. Scots should vote on that basis. So of you go then. As we wave you goodbye we will wish you evrything you wish for us.

Maybe the Prime Minister IS the anonymous source.
