Letter: Young Wyllie’s bar sculpture

I RECALL living and working in Gourock, and often meeting George Wyllie – a customs officer – both socially and when we went aboard the liners which called into the Clyde en route between Canada and Liverpool.

That was in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Even then George was dabbling in sculpture from a garage at his home in a cul-de-sac high above Greenock and Gourock.

One of his most notable works at the time was established along the whole length of the main bar of the Bay Hotel, now long gone. The sculpture was called Bumper Fish, because the background of the bar was a shoal of fish shaped from old chrome car bumpers.

I wonder if they ever survived the demolition of the hotel?
