Judicial moves

I AM sure Scotland’s citizens will not be reassured by the news that thousands of violent criminals, including killers and rapists, are still being released from prison under the automatic early release scheme, despite the SNP’s 2007 pledge to abolish it (your report, 7 September).

The lack of progress on the matter is obviously money-
driven and apparently penny-pinching takes precedence over public safety.

It is a major cornerstone of the “soft-touch” justice system that has been afflicted upon us by justice secretary Kenny MacAskill.

While Prime Minister David Cameron moved former justice secretary Ken Clarke to make room for someone more in tune with public opinion, sadly First Minister Alex Salmond didn’t do the same in his reshuffle.
