The Olympic opening ceremony – apart from moments of technical brilliance – was an overlong, frequently embarrassing hymn of praise to the wonderfulness of Britain (though really England). This culminated in the supreme arrogance of Team GB’s entry, already dripping with gold, disguised as Imperial Stormtroopers. British jingoism sweeps the medals board leaving sport and international brotherhood a distant bronze.
