International aid

I thank Colin MacLean (Letters, 1 August) for his positive comment on my letter of 31 July.
I agree with him that many
non-governmental organisations make important contributions to international aid and
co-operation.

Some of these are multi-
national, some UK-based and some Scottish-based.

Indeed, the Network of International Development Organisations in Scotland lists some 70 such bodies, many primarily Scottish, some Scottish sections of multinational or UK bodies. Some are church-related.

A good example of a Scottish-based one is Mary’s Meals, in the news recently as a result of
funds raised by a Scottish schoolgirl, which ensures that many children in Malawi and elsewhere, who might otherwise go hungry, get meals in school.
