History lesson
Bill Goodall (Letters, 11 February) argues that I am rewriting history. On 13 August, 1704 John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, won a notable victory at Blenheim in Bavaria during the war of the Spanish Succession.
John Churchill’s father was a major Devon landowner called Sir Winston Churchill.
Wartime Winston was a direct descendant. In late 1706 John Churchill moved many of his battle-hardened troops to the Scottish Border to stiffen the resolve for union among Scotland’s elites.
The Anglo-British state is substantially the creation of major Suthron families. These families are ruthless in their resolve. I think for example of the British Prime Minister’s atrocity at Dresden in February, 1945.
To argue that Scotland entered freely into an equal partnership with England in 1707 is the real rewriting of history.
