High cost

Dr STEPHEN Moreton and Colin Weatherley are critical of Robert Pate and GM Lindsay, (Letters, 21 July). I am sure that Messrs Moreton and Weatherley will have noted that experts at the University of Toronto and the University of California Santa Cruz have stated that natural changes in seawater chemistry are a key cause of climate change, (Your report 19 July). The study focused on the past 130 million years.

Researchers believe that “times of high sulphate concentrations in ocean water correlate with global cooling, just as times of low concentration correspond with greenhouse periods”. And here is the UK “wasting” £1 billion on renewables subsidies every year trying to stop the unstoppable.

The UK is the only country in the world stupid enough to pass a law legally binding us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Scotland has only 0.15 per cent of greenhouse gases, while the UK level as a whole is 1.5 per cent.

It is ludicrous that the green zealots have ambitions to “save the planet” while other countries grow their economies and their emissions. The projected savings in UK emissions over the next 40 years will be cancelled out by the increase in emissions from China in just one year. The zealots’ green dream has turned into a financial nightmare for the rest of us.
