Flying the flag

The Prime Minister states that “whether our athletes were English, Scottish, Welsh or from Northern Ireland, they draped themselves in one flag” at the Olympics.

What he fails to point out is that it was a requirement that they do so, as any dilution of the “Team GB brand equity” by using other flags or symbols would have seen severe sanctions applied against the athlete by the GB Olympic committee.

Compare this with the Ryder Cup, where Europe competed and the golfers and supporters were freely waving their country flags and emblems – adding to the festivities. Mr Cameron has chosen a bad example as this was an example of enforced jingoism.
