Fails to add up

AN otherwise excellent article, “Washington’s Warriors” (6 August) stated that Scotland had four universities, one each in Edinburgh and Glasgow and two in Aberdeen. What a gaffe. What about Scotland’s oldest university, St Andrews, founded in 1410? There were indeed four others, although King’s College and Marischal College merged in 1860 to become the University of Aberdeen, and it is accepted there were only four, but this at a time when England had only two, Oxford and Cambridge.
