Dutch energy
Donald Trump’s letter to the First Minister (your reports) states that the Netherlands has abolished its offshore wind power programme.
However, the ministry of economic affairs, the Hague, advises on its website that the Dutch government’s goal is to have renewable energy meet at least 14 per cent of the overall demand for energy in 2020, and that offshore wind energy is to provide a considerable share of the growth in renewable energy generation.
Other relevant websites advise that a taskforce investigating off-shore wind power in the Netherlands recently concluded that off-shore wind parks deliver relatively cheap CO2-free electrical energy, create thousands of jobs, and a range of new, sustainable economic activities.
Notable current project preparations for extending the range of offshore wind parks include the construction of a 600MW offshore wind farm to the north of the country, and an innovative wind farm of 130MW to the west. Both wind farms are expected to be operational by 2014.

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 11:21 PMSam... New York State is roughly the size of England... Scotland of course is somewhat greater than half this size. But our environment is in process of being wrecked with at least 500 middle to large industrialisations under development... a foul mess for the future..

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 11:10 PMSam...I should think that Mr Trump would be quite happy to have the windfarm 13 or so miles offshore because at 65 storeys high it would not be visible!

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 08:38 PMIs Trump aware that in Upper New York State there are already 38 operational onshore wind farms. There is also a long queue of developers waiting for Fed approval to build a large number of offshore wind farms 13 to 17 miles off the Eastern sea board. One of the largest, the Long Island - New York City Offshore Project, off the Rockaway Peninsular was originally pulled from this long list by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) which made various excuses about its viability, only for the rival New York Power Authority (NYPA) to step in and take the two phase 700 MW project forward. By 2016-17 Mr. Trump may well be able to see the 291 two hundred and ninety foot high wind turbines from Trump Tower in Manhattan. (Source: The New York Times)

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 11:07 AMIs there not to be a large wind installation near Aberfeldy? To how great an extent is this to benefit the community? Obviously very minimal creation of associated permanent jobs but what about sustainable economic activities?

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 10:41 AMWhat we are seeing in Holland is the tail end of schemes which have been in the pipeline for some time, contracts signed and grants allocated. The game is now essentially over, politicians just need to change departments etc before the manure hits the air conditioning.

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 07:25 AMBrave prospects, like a last gasp, but it will not happen, I'll be bound, not least because the EU and its suicidal targets has been rumbled and will have fizzled within a couple of years. Also, the Dutch are not so daft.
