Bus beats tram
Jon Stanley (Letters, 11 September) does well to highlight another major problem facing Edinburgh’s beleagured tram project in pointing out that the tram line between St Andrew Square and the Airport will be used by two very different groups of passengers. On the one hand, travellers – often with heavy luggage – heading to or from the airport, and on the other a miscellany of residents, short journey shoppers, schoolchildren, parties heading for a day at the Zoo, those with baby buggies, rugby enthusiasts etc etc.
When putting the tram plan into action, did the council not realise that Edinburgh has one of the best – if not the best – airport links in the country? The Edinburgh Airlink buses all have comfortable seats, tables, a large luggage area with CCTV and free wi-fi. Buses run to and from the airport every ten minutes with limited stops until midnight and then every half-hour after that.In two years, when the trams are eventually up and running, which service to the airport would any sensible air passenger choose?
