With a fifth of the EU’s fish stocks, a quarter of its renewable energy and a third of its oil and gas, it would be just as hard for Scotland to get out of the EU as it will be to shake off London control.
In any event, the decision on our EU membership will be made on political grounds. The current debate about legal advice is, therefore, a storm in a teacup. Labour should address issues of substance if it is seeking a return to electoral credibility.
For example, perhaps we should hear from Johann Lamont whether Labour would want an independent Scotland in or out of the EU. And whose side would she take if Milliband or Cameron were to oppose Scotland’s entry?
I’m certain she has yet to pass comment on either question, but we need to know.
