American touch

In STEPHEN McGinty’s interesting article, (Perspective, 29 September), he “researched his column”, making the verb transitive in the American way,
instead of “doing research for his column”, which is clearer. Some day someone may “research his column” and those of others when they are going through the newspaper archives.

I am reminded of the American transitive use of “protest” as in “protested the decision”, instead of “protested against the decision”. If the former is allowed then the protesters who are arrested will have a hard time “protesting their innocence”.
