Absurd unions
Congratulations to the London Olympics organisers for a truly magnificent sporting occasion backed up by an impressive logistics infrastructure.
It is regrettable, if not inevitable, that the politicians try to obscure the differences between a sporting union and a political or economic Union for their own political gain.
Every four years the British Isles come together to form a sporting union.
It would be absurd to suggest that the Republic of Ireland should rejoin the UK based on the success of a periodic rugby team.
Similarly, the arguments put forward by the Unionist “better together” campaigners could equally be applied to a better “better together” – justifying a “Team EU”.
The constitutional future of the UK and its components should be based on the aspirations of the people rather than a four-yearly medal table.
