Letter: Megrahi appeal

Your leader, "The march of time reveals MacAskill's feet of clay" (20 August) misses the point.

Mr Salmond and Mr MacAskill did not fancy, out of decency, a man thought by many to be innocent, dying in a Scottish jail.

Still less did they fancy an appeal going ahead which would have exposed to the world the shortcomings of the Scottish judicial system. Perhaps they could hardly say this in public.

Mr Megrahi was left with the impression that his only chance of going back to Tripoli was to drop the appeal.

Dr Mark Campbell-Roddis writes regarding the compassion release of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi that "no-one complicit in the cold-blooded murder of 270 people deserves any compassion" (Letters, 25 August).

I sincerely hope that he is a doctor of philosophy rather than a medical practitioner as he seems to hold views that are distant from the ethical standards enshrined in the Hippocratic Oath.
