Less self-screening in poor areas
PEOPLE living in deprived areas of the city are far less likely to take part in bowel cancer checks than other residents.
Analysis of figures from NHS Lothian's bowel screening programme has shown that around a third of the Capital's poorest people returned the self-screening kit, while in more affluent areas, nearly two-thirds of people took part.
The figures, published by ISD Scotland, show the bowel screening programme has been a success in attracting more test samples, although the level is still below the national target of 60 per cent.
Health chiefs said earlier this year that it had already saved the lives of several people.
