Leith sculptor Paolozzi added to online biography dictionary

LEITH-born sculptor Sir Eduardo Paolozzi has been added to the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

The sculptor was credited with paving the way for the "pop art" movement and was responsible for the open palm, section of limb and human foot at the top of Leith Walk.

Also added today is Edinburgh poet and literary critic, David Daiches. The poet's range and depth of knowledge of Scottish literature was enormous but he was also an expert on whisky.

Leith-born former Kirk Moderator The Very Rev Professor James Whyte, who moved millions with his sermon after the Lockerbie disaster, has also been added.

He was educated at Daniel Stewart's College and Edinburgh University.

They were among 215 men and women who died in 2005 whose lives have been added to the dictionary today, including footballer George Best, past prime ministers Sir Edward Heath and Lord Callaghan and comedian Ronnie Barker.

The dictionary can be found at www.oxforddnb.com
