Sun and fun on the beach - but not for long

THOUSANDS of Scots had a splashing time on beaches up and down the country yesterday as summer sunshine made a glorious return.

Edinburgh was the country's hot spot, with a top temperature of 23C - though sea temperatures were a chilly 13C - but it was generally a fine day all over Scotland, with highs of 22C in Perth and 21C in Glasgow and across the Highlands.

However, the Met Office has forecast the end of what has been several days of fine weather, as the ridge of high pressure that has kept the skies clear and temperatures up moves away today.

Behind it will come more unsettled weather, with showers and cloud moving across the country, although Edinburgh is expected to remain clear into the afternoon and see temperatures of between 18C and 19C.

The unsettled weather is expected to remain throughout the weekend, affecting all parts of Scotland.
