RECENT comments from Anne, the Princess Royal, that we should consider a trade in horsemeat have sparked heated debate (your report, 15 November).
The implication is that by treating horses in the same way as other animals bred and slaughtered for meat, their welfare would be improved.
However, my organisation, Animal Aid, has filmed undercover in numerous farms and slaughterhouses. Our footage shows that the production, trade and slaughter of hundreds of millions of farmed animals leads to them being mistreated and abused.
Princess Anne is naive to think horses would benefit from being commodified and processed through the meat trade.
The best way to help animals is to adopt an animal-free diet.
