Last Titanic survivor's ashes scattered at sea

THE ashes of the last survivor of the Titanic have been scattered in the waters where the ill-fated voyage began.

Millvina Dean died on 31 May this year at the age of 97. She was nine weeks old when the liner sank after hitting an iceberg in the north Atlantic in the early hours of 15 April, 1912. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people.

Her ashes were scattered yesterday by her partner Bruno Nordmanis, 87, from a small launch at Southampton Docks – the point from which the Titanic departed 97 years ago. The sun came out briefly moments after her ashes fell on the water.

David Hill, of the British Titanic Society, said: "It has not been a sad day at all but a day full of nice memories. She was a lovely lady."
