Laid Bare: Microdermabrasion

What is it? Think of it as the Rolls Royce of exfoliation. The deep exfoliation method claims to instantly deliver smooth, refined and glowing skin as well as super-cleansing those pores. Long-term, it softens fine lines and blemishes and boosts the production of collagen.

Where? sk:n face and body clinic on Hanover Street(0844 800 317, www.sknclinics.co.uk) How does it work? After a thorough consultation and skin analysis, the microderm-abrasion system – a machine that resembles a small vacuum cleaner – propels a jet of micro crystals across the skin's surface, removing dead cells and thoroughly cleansing. It takes around ten to 15 minutes and, while it isn't painful you do feel a slight scratching sensation. The result is sparkling skin, albeit a little pink to begin with.

Was it worth it? Our undercover tested enjoyed the results so much, she has booked a follow-up treatment. Her skin was glowing, clearer and softer – and appeared to have slightly reduced her pigmentation spots and enlarged pores. She said: "Often standard facials are great at the time, but the next day the effects have worn off.

"My skin felt and looked fresher and I felt more confident not wearing make-up. The nurse who did the treatment told me it's a progressive procedure so, I am going back with the aim of scrubbing back those years."
