Labour Equals Freedom

DIRECTED BY: Damjan Kozole

STARRING: Peter Musevsky, Natasa Barbara Gracner

THE humiliating and emasculating effect of being a balding, middle-aged machine operator and having no work - and little prospect of ever getting work again - is the unlikely source of chuckles in the sweet but slight Slovenian comedy Labour Equals Freedom.

Pero (Peter Musevsky) in Labour Equals Freedom is feeling the debilitating effects of being long-term unemployed. He can't afford to get his car fixed or treat his daughter or provide his wife with much of a life so, when she leaves him, he hits rock bottom and feels he has no option left but to hang himself. Which sounds unbearably glum, but director Damjan Kozole infuses the film with a deadpan humour and an uplifting message suggesting that no matter how bad things get, they can get good again in an instant.

• Labour Equals Freedom, Filmhouse, 21 August, 10pm and 22 August 6.15pm
