Kirk’s credentials

ProfESSOR Norman Bonney (Letters, 19 May) is right to question the credentials of the Church of Scotland as an agent of reconciliation. In the event of a Yes vote for independence, we must hope that the British government acts with grace, understanding and generosity of spirit towards the departing Scotland.

Meanwhile, the Kirk adopts an uncompromising, hard-line approach to local churches that decide to part company with the Church of Scotland, forcing them out of their buildings and manses.

An equivalent attitude from the British government would be to acknowledge the right of Scotland to choose independence, but then to insist that the territory of Scotland belongs to the UK, so the independent Scotland must set up its new nation elsewhere.
