The 24-year-old former Motherwell centre back left Ross County in the summer after two seasons and has not been able to secure a new club much to the surprise of Sons manager Stephen Aitken.

Aitken said: “I said when I first got the manager’s job at Dumbarton that I was keen to bring Steven Saunders to the club however he had full time opportunities in both Scotland and England to pursue. I thought that was the end of things. However, when I heard last week that nothing had been firmed up, I got in touch and it looks like we will get him on board.”

“He did a full pre-season at Bradford City and played recently for Dunfermline as a trialist so he is ready for first-team action.”

Saunders was capped in 2010 against the Faroe Islands.
