Key reforms to fishing industry
The key reforms needed to improve the fishing industry
• All fish stocks will have to reach sustainable levels by 2015.
• An ecosystem approach will be adopted for all fisheries, with long-term management plans based on the best available scientific advice.
• The throwing of unwanted fish back into the sea will be phased out. Fishermen will be obliged to land all the fish they catch.
• Consumers will be able to get better information on the quality and sustainability of the products they buy.
• Operators throughout the fishing sector will have to make their own economic decisions to adapt fleet size to fishing possibilities.
