RONALD STEVENSON'S BEN DORAIN
CITY HALLS, GLASGOW, 19 JANUARY
AS PART of Celtic Connections, James Grossmith conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and a chorus assembled by Scottish Opera for the premiere of Ronald Stevenson's Ben Dorain. The work – for double orchestra, double choir and soloists – has taken 45 years to complete, and reaches the point of performance just before Stevenson's 80th birthday. Stevenson's long-standing friendship with Hugh MacDairmid is honoured with the inclusion in the text of parts of the late poet's translation of the original Gaelic poem In Praise of Ben Doarain by Duncan Ban MacIntyre.
