Keeping tradition alive

Jim Gilchrist makes many good points on the Scottish Arts Council's recent change of focus regarding priorities for its flexible funding (Review, 10 May).

Traditional music, by its nature, clearly has a strong focus on keeping the traditions alive, and is very rooted in sharing music among friends and community. It cannot continue to thrive purely on the basis of innovation and performance.

High-quality performance can only continue in the future when the traditions continue to be nurtured at a grass-roots level. It appears that community-based traditional music organisations will find it increasingly difficult to secure funding from the Scottish Arts Council as a result of this decision.
