John Gibson: Carol Kidd, she's still a class act
Windmills on our minds.Needs all the financial help it can get, the Edinburgh Jazzfest. So we've got Carol Kidd coming to the Queen's Hall on August 8.
Quality vocals guaranteed. Sponsored by Fife-based Icon Energy. They do wind turbines and the like. Ask Carol nicely and she might oblige with Windmills, she loves Michael Legrand.
You should know that guests at the Queen's will include the attache to the consul general of Mongolia, one Kenny Stewart, businessman and member of the UN. Icon Energy will be putting windmills into the Grassmarket mardi gras.
On the quality singers theme, Michael Buble's now in the flatters-to-deceive ranks.
Since that altogether ill-conceived special on ITV, everybody seems to have gone off him. The Buble bubble's bust. Well and truly.
You can't beat some beetroot
Beetroot sales are soaring, didn't you know? Health-conscious shoppers are snapping up record amounts of the stuff. Should we panic?
Listen, beetroot pickled in vinegar was a staple in Leith and I'm talking about the days when we'd repelled the French off Inchkeith, when if you saw a man in a suit at the foot of Leith Walk he was the accused, you saw a dog with a tail, it was a tourist.
Check with Tom Farmer if you must but you'd have your mum throw a beetroot sandwich from the tenement window to you playing in the street.
Folic acid is one of beetroot's richest sources. Works a treat against against high blood pressure, dementia and Alzheimer's. It was in the papers. Can't remember where I read it.
Afterwords . .
You'd maybe call me, among other things, a voracious reader. I'm ploughing through the Sundays, browsed with the Broons between bacon butties when I'm confronted by the headline HOW DID RAOUL MOAT DIE? Who cares, for crying out loud! He's gone. Dead, ded ded. Put out with the garbage long ago. Ask me something else, like 'who'll win the first Edinburgh derby?'
