Letter: Historic plans

Contrary to your reports (13 December), Historic Scotland does not have strong concerns about City of Edinburgh Council's refurbishment plans for the Assembly Rooms.

As we made clear to your reporter, any issues we had with the original proposals have been largely addressed through productive discussions with the council and we do not anticipate any problems with the finalised proposals that we have now received.

Monday's article ("Heritage help sought to reign in 9 million city icon revamp") included a comment from a letter sent some time ago and the plans have been altered since then to take account of our comments. Its inclusion misrepresented our position and the viability of the revised proposal approved by the council last week.

We fully support the investment in and continued use of this iconic venue and have accepted an application to assist in the funding.
