Jealous knifeman gets life for murder bid

A JEALOUS man who tried to murder his former partner's new boyfriend was given a life sentence yesterday.

Graham Meikle, 42, burst into a bedroom and saw Susan Airlie sitting semi-naked, waiting for fake tan to dry. It had been applied by George Carr and he was lying under the duvet.

Meikle repeatedly stabbed Mr Carr, 59, about the chest, and a court heard he had been lucky to survive. The blade of the knife had snapped, and the tip was left embedded in his body.

Later, Meikle boasted of the attack and said he wanted Mr Carr charged with theft because "he's still got half my blade in him".

The High Court in Edinburgh was told that Meikle, of Ferry Road Avenue, Edinburgh, had a history of violent offending and was considered a risk to the public.

The judge, Lord Emslie, imposed an order for lifelong restriction. He said Meikle would serve at least six years before he became eligible for release.

Meikle admitted attempting to murder Mr Carr in his home in Muirhouse Parkway, Edinburgh, on 3 January last year.
