Jazz album review: The Diva Jazz Trio - Never Never Land
THE DIVA JAZZ TRIO Never Never Land **** Arbors Records ARCD 19393, £13.99
This is the first recording by the rhythm section of one of New York's most respected jazz big bands, DIVA, which has been on the go since the 1990s under the leadership of drummer Sherrie Maricle. It's clear from the outset that this is a working trio characterised by its classiness. Pianist Tomoko Ohno has a light, elegant touch and flair for the unexpected, while bassist Noriko Ueda plays lyrically and eloquently, with Maricle subtly driving from the drums.
