Jazz review: Neil Cowley Trio - Radio Silence
THE third release from the Neil Cowley Trio often echoes The Bad Plus and EST, but Cowley has staked his own claim to a slot in that particular niche in contemporary jazz, and this outing is likely to please anyone who enjoyed its predecessors.
Like several bands on the current UK scene (the Portico Quartet or Get The Blessing come to mind), the approach is strong on groove but light on improvisation.
Rhythm replaces complex harmony as the building blocks of the music, and Cowley's trademark ostinato chording provides a repeating motif.
The crunching opener, Monoface, the rocking Gerald, the agreeably manic Hug The Greyhound and Stereoface are all typical of their approach, while other compositions lean in a more ambient direction, including a hidden track a minute or so after the closing Portal.
