JOHN ALLRED /JEFF BARNHART/ DANNY COOTS The ABC's Of Jazz *** Arbors Records ARCD 19371, £13.70

Featuring the trombonist John Allred, who has just played at the Edinburgh and Nairn jazz festivals, this CD is a strange mix. There's stride piano – courtesy of Jeff Barnhart – and a classical-sounding interpretation of Hoagy Carmichael's In The Still Of The Night. There are tunes by Sonny Rollins and Fats Waller. And there are a couple of ill-advised vocal numbers by Barnhart. Allred, however, is in fine form – notably on the gorgeous ballad My One And Only Love.
