Jazz album review: Gerry Mulligan
JAZZ GERRY MULLIGAN All Star Groups – Three Classic Albums Plus * * * * *
Avid Jazz AMSC987, 8.99
Among baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan's best work was a series of collaborative albums he made in the late 1950s, and this bargain-priced double-CD comprises three of the ones he recorded in 1957: his encounters with pianist Thelonious Monk, tenor man Stan Getz and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond. All three are gems; the saxophone summits are particularly notable for their laidback feel as the two horns appear to engage in friendly musical chat.
