It's raining so it must be laundry day
AN initiative that uses rainwater to wash laundry at a hospital has won a council award.
The rainwater harvesting system at St John's Hospital in Livingston, which reduces the amount of water the laundry room takes from the mains by 30 per cent, has already proved its worth by saving NHS Lothian the 117,000 it cost to install in reduced water bills.
The project played a key role in winning the hospital a Healthy Working Lives Gold Award.
Bill Mooney, the hospital's estates manager, said: "We were looking at ways of saving resources.
"There's no shortage of rain in Scotland so we spoke to Scottish Water about ways to use this 'grey water' rather than letting it drain away.
"The idea is we're not using up fresh drinking water. Instead we're recycling water that would not otherwise be used."
