Isles post offices face axe
A SIXTH of the post office branches in the Northern and Western Isles are being earmarked for closure.
The Post Office today opens a six-week public consultation on its area plan for the 113 branches in Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides.
In the Western Isles, it plans to axe branches at Borve, Bragar, Breasclete, Gress, Grimshader, Shader, Skigersta, Knock, South Dell and Leurbost on Lewis; Northton on Harris; and Sidinish and Tigharry on North Uist; leaving 46 offices.
It plans to keep 33 branches in Orkney and 34 in Shetland, but close Burray, Harray, Rendall and Swannay in Orkney, and Camb Yell and Levenwick in Shetland.
The Post Office says 97 per cent of the area's population will be within one mile of a branch after the closure programme.
