Island church's Kirk split bid fails

AN ISLAND congregation will not split from the Church of Scotland despite three quarters of its members voting to break away.

The High Church in Stornoway held a secret ballot because of unrest at the Kirk's decision to appoint openly gay ministers.

Some 162 people (74 per cent) voted to withdraw, in-principle, from the Church of Scotland. But the church's kirk session had set a minimum threshold of 80 per cent.
