Island festival set to raise a glass to Whisky Galore

THE first Whisky Galore Festival is to be launched next week on Barra to mark 60 years since the launch of the famous film.

The island was the setting for Alexander Mackendrick's 1949 comedy based on Compton Mackenzie's book.

Mackenzie, who lived for many years on Barra and is buried on the island, was inspired to pen the tale by the real-life shipwreck of the freighter SS Politician in 1941.

The weekend of events will include whisky tastings, tours, exhibitions, seminars, re-enactments, traditional workshops and a golf tournament.

Some of the local people who took part as young extras in the film are expected to make the journey to Barra for the festival.
