Irvine Welsh pays tribute to NHS project

IRVINE Welsh, the Trainspotting author, has paid tribute to an NHS Lothian project that gets people off drink and drugs.

On a visit to the Lothians and Edinburgh Abstinence Programme (LEAP), he said had the service arrived two decades earlier it would have saved the lives of some of those affected by addictions to substances or alcohol.

The Edinburgh writer, whose Trainspotting book and subsequent film were praised for providing a stark insight to the lives of heroin addicts, visited the project and spoke to those involved.

Encouraging complete abstinence, the LEAP scheme has won widespread praise for its work in recent months.

Mr Welsh said: "It is very inspiring and uplifting to visit LEAP, not only to hear about the treatment process, but to see the way people have embraced and made the most of this opportunity."
