Iron brew Duke

Have your say

I wonder why Christine Jardine (Perspective, 22 November) is stumped on the question of why there should be a statue of the 1st Duke of Wellington “in Scotland, far less Glasgow”, with or without a traffic cone on its head.

I do not have the figures for Glasgow or Scotland, but out of 25,000 British troops at Waterloo, I would guess that proportionately far more Scots took part than from the rest of the UK. (The Isle of Skye alone drew some 1,600 to fight there, one in 15 of the total force.)

The Iron Duke may have been Anglo-Irish but he commanded an army made up disproportionately of Scots and Highland Scots.
