Irish alarm over new sectarian song
THE Irish government has expressed its concerns to Scottish ministers about a new sectarian song directed at Scots of Irish descent.
The Irish consul general in Scotland wrote to the Scottish Government after being contacted by a Celtic fan concerned about the song, which was sung by Rangers fans at last month's Old Firm match. It contains the lines: "Why don't you go home, the famine's over, why don't you go home?"
Rangers Football Club also reacted to the complaint, saying the club's "best interests would be served if fans refrained" from the chant.
A Scottish Government spokeswoman stressed it was committed to stamping out bigotry. However, this latest development is an embarrassment for ministers, coming the day after former first minister Jack McConnell criticised Alex Salmond in the Scottish Catholic Observer for ditching his campaign against sectarianism.
