Iris ID devices are blurred by eye problems
SOFTWARE which uses iris recognition could fail in patients who have eye diseases, an NHS Lothian study has found.
Experts at the city's Eye Pavilion carried out a study to see if patients with damaged eyes would still register on up-to-date iris recognition machines.
They found that the devices failed around a fifth of the time with those with iritis – the inflammation of the iris which can occur in anyone very suddenly.
The machines have been regarded as one of the most fool-proof methods of identification.
Dr Tariq Aslam, a specialist registrar in ophthalmology for NHS Lothian, said: "While we have found that iris recognition systems are generally resilient to the development of various forms of eye disease, the development of iritis could pose some problems.
"More research is needed before iris recognition systems are more widely implemented."
